FINE HAIR | THICK HAIR · ST KILDA, MELBOURNE

Density changes
everything.

Every hair texture is welcome.Fine hair and thick hair ask for completely different decisions. James considers density, strand texture, growth patterns and daily styling to create a shape that gives the hair exactly what it needs—more presence, less weight or a more intelligent balance of both.

THE DIFFERENCE

01

Fine hair with presence

Shape, perimeter and internal structure are designed to preserve density and create the feeling of fuller, stronger hair without over-layering.

02

Thick hair with freedom

Weight is removed deliberately and invisibly, allowing dense hair to move, sit closer and feel easier without becoming thin or shapeless.

03

Cut for your routine

The finish is planned around how you actually wear and style your hair, creating a result that remains convincing beyond the salon.

01What it is+

Density changes the logic of a haircut. Fine or low-density hair usually needs disciplined preservation of weight; very thick or dense hair often needs space created internally so the shape can move and sit closer without appearing thinned out.

James looks beyond labels. Strand thickness, total density, growth patterns, texture, condition and where the hair concentrates around the head all influence the plan.

02Shapes + possibilities+

DENSITY IS A DESIGN MATERIAL

Fine + low-density hair

Perimeters strengthened and layering restrained to protect visible substance.

Fine but abundant hair

Individual strands are fine but overall density allows movement when weight is released carefully.

Thick + dense hair

Invisible internal management creates freedom while preserving a convincing exterior shape.

Coarse texture

Tool choice and edge quality are adjusted so the hair remains controlled without becoming rigid.

Fine curly hair

Curl movement supported without sacrificing the weight needed for fullness.

Dense curls + waves

Expansion and bulk shaped strategically rather than aggressively removed everywhere.

03What determines suitability+

Perimeter

The visible edge determines whether hair reads full, strong, soft or unnecessarily thin.

Layer placement

Layers begin where they solve a problem—volume, movement or balance—not simply because the hair is long or thick.

Internal weight

Hidden density is preserved or released according to how the finished shape should sit and grow.

Condition

Fragility, chemical history and heat damage can limit how much texturising or razor work is responsible.

04What happens at the appointment+
  1. 01

    Assess dry

Density, strand size, movement and concentration of weight are observed in the natural fall.

  2. 02

    Define the priority

Fullness, control, movement, reduction of bulk or a balance of several goals is agreed.

  3. 03

    Build the exterior

The silhouette and perimeter are established with the strength the hair needs.

  4. 04

    Refine internally

Layering and weight work are added selectively, then checked dry for honesty.

05Time, price + maintenance+

Timing

Most haircuts: 60 minutes. Very dense, long, corrective or transformational work: 90 minutes.

Pricing

Haircut $150 · Transformation/extra time $220.

Maintenance

Timing depends on the shape. Precision bobs and pixies return sooner; long, suitability-led shapes may last several months.

06Is this right for you?+
  • Fine hair that has repeatedly been over-layered or made to feel sparse.
  • Thick hair that feels heavy, expands excessively or has been thinned without a clear shape.
  • Clients wanting an honest plan based on density rather than a trend.

BEFORE YOU BOOK

QUESTIONS,
ANSWERED.

01Can a haircut make fine hair look thicker?+

It cannot create more strands, but a strong perimeter, balanced proportion and precisely placed internal weight removal can create scaffolding within the shape—supporting lift and internal volume so the existing density reads fuller.

02Can you remove weight without making thick hair frizzy?+

Yes, when removal is placed internally and adapted to texture. Indiscriminate thinning near the surface can create expansion and short flyaway pieces.

03Are layers bad for fine hair?+

No. Poorly placed or excessive layers are the problem. Selective layering can create movement while retaining a strong perimeter.

04Do you use thinning scissors?+

Tool choice depends on the hair and result. Alongside scissors, dry cutting, point cutting, disconnection and razor work, James uses advanced channel cutting—directing the hair up, down and side to side to remove or redistribute weight with precise control.

05How do I know whether to book 60 or 90 minutes?+

Choose 90 minutes for major change, correction, exceptional density/length or when previous experiences suggest the consultation and cutting will require more time.

SUITABILITY FIRST

The right haircut does not fight density. It understands where the hair needs strength, where it needs space and where it should simply be left alone.
